Nutrisystem 50 Percent Off Sale! (Is It the Best Signup Deal?)

Nutrisystem 50% Off first Two Weeks: Well, if you are looking to join Nutrisystem, there’s some good news. To launch their new FreshStart® program, Nutrisystem is running a 50% off sale for the first two weeks:

nutrisystem 50% off sale

However, while this is a good sale, we did the math and it’s not the best promotion out there. If you plan to stay with Nutrisystem long-term, you’ll want to skip this sale and go for another one instead. Here’s why:

Is the 50% Off Sale Best?

We just ran a comparison of the three top Nutrisystem promotions, and were surprised to see the results. While the “50% off” sale sounds great, it only results in the best price for the first month.

Assuming you stick with the diet 3+ months, the cheapest way to join Nutrisystem is their Nutrisystem/Save40 promotion which locks in the initial low rate that you pay.

You’ll also be able to stack a promo code at checkout to save an extra $20+, making it the best deal out there.

“50 Percent Off Nutrisystem” is a Bit Misleading

Like, we said, the idea of 50% is really enticing, but it’s only for the first two weeks. Because you’ll be on Nutrisystem for at least 2 months (or face a cancellation fee) this sale loses its luster when you do the math long-term.

Before you join Nutrisystem (or any other diet) it’s good to educate yourself by reading user reviews. One of the most important factors is the total cost. For Nutrisystem, that includes the cost of groceries to supplement your Nutrisystem meals.

To learn more about the true price tag of Nutrisystem, check out our article, What’s the real cost of Nutrisystem?

The Uniquely Yours plan offers “total menu freedom,” (didn’t Braveheart die for that!?) meaning you can mix and match between all of their 150 meal and snack options.

All plans are based on “perfectly portioned” foods that are high in protein and fiber, and low in bad carbs. with emphasis on the glycemic index. What Men Like About the Diet: (Positive)

nutrisystem for men/40
review good

As mentioned, it’s an easy diet to follow, which makes it a favorite option for busy people. Nutrisystem for Men ranks as the #5 best commercial diet, and #11 overall for easiest diet to follow by U.S. News & World Report.

It also ranks well for best fast-weight loss diets,” as you hit the ground running and can expect to shed weight quickly. In fact, Nutrisystem for Men challenges you to lose up to 15 pounds in your first month. (based on starting weight)

Nutrisystem for men promises the “right mix of nutrients to fuel your body,” including lots of protein and fiber, which makes you feel fuller, longer. They also have special plans for vegetarians and those with diabetes.

Another plus is that they offer new customers 40% off and that price doesn’t go up. (Don’t just go to their homepage to signup, as you’ll pay more!)

So, in summary, it’s very convenient, making it popular with busy people who don’t want to cook every day. You can see inspiring testimonials for Nutrisystem for Men here.

Why Men Complain: (Negative)

“Say something positive?
Well positive ain’t where I live!” – Naughty by Nature, Everything’s Gonna Be Alright

review bad

Convenience is a two-sided coin, and the “heat and eat” approach doesn’t work for every man. Although reviews are mostly positive, a common complaint is that Nutrisystem for Men limits your food options.

In fact, I think more than one negative review has been written by teary-eyed men sitting at Buffalo Wild Wings, trying to resist forbidden wings and beer!

Anyway, as with all meal-delivery diets, (Medifast, Bistro MD, South Beach Diet, etc.) you’re committing to eating the meals and snacks they send you. This approach requires discipline, and is the source of most failure and bad reviews. That means “long-term weight loss” could be considered a weakness, because not all men want to stick with it after a few months.

No one dog breed (I like dachshunds!) or presidential candidate works for every man (apparently!) and the same goes for diets. If you’re here, you’re skeptical and doing your homework, and that’s good!

Another potential “negative” is that you are charged for a whole month’s food up-front. Even though you’d be spending that same $300+ a month on food if you weren’t on the diet, it’s a chunk of change on your credit card bill every month.

If you prefer to do your own cooking and count points, maybe meal-delivery isn’t for you and you’d rather just pass. If so, you can always consider Weight Watchers instead. (Nutrisystem vs Weight Watchers

Is Nutrisystem for Men Healthy?

nutrisystem for men healthy

Nutrisystem for Men is high in protein and low-glycemic (good) carbs. It also adds a healthy amount of fiber so that you stay full longer.

Losing weight is one thing, but is Nutrisystem food good for you? To answer that question, let’s look at the daily amounts of calories, protein, carbs, sodium, and fiber.

Here’s how Nutrisystem for Men compares to the daily recommendations for a man trying to lose 1+ pound per week:

 Nutrisystem: (for Men)Daily Recommended:
Calories:1450-15002000 (source)
Carbs:165-206g225-325g (source)

Sodium:2000-2300 mg2300 mg (source)
Fat:33g40g (source)
Sat. Fat:17g20g (source)

As you can see, Nutrisystem for Men foods compare favorably to the recommended daily allowances for men on a diet.

How Much Does It Cost? (For Men)

Nutrisystem plans for men cost a bit more than the same plans for women. In fact, the “man” plans end up costing about $1.50 more per day. Not a huge deal, but it adds up over a month, and you should be aware of the cost.

Why do men pay more? Men pay more because the plans are based on your daily calorie and nutrition needs. Men are generally bigger and taller, and require more calories, so Nutrisystem includes an extra snack every day. That extra food accounts for the price difference. Besides that, the men’s plans are very similar to the women’s plans.

Cost depends on the plan you choose: There are 3 plan options, and on average, they cost about $12 per day, ($360 / month) unless you have a coupon, which drops the price. (below)

The main difference between plan options is that you pay more for increased variety of foods. You can learn more about the cost of Nutrisystem here!

Nutrisystem for Men: Plan Options:

Choose your own menu with CORE and Uniquely Yours plans

There are three plan levels: BASIC, CORE, and Uniquely Yours.

Which one is best for you? That depends on how much meal variety you want, and whether you might need additional support from their dietitians.

  • BASIC Plan: Pre-selected foods, lacks “unlimited” support, but it’s the least expensive. If you are OK with their meal choices, a lot of men save money with “Basic”
  • CORE Plan: The most popular choice for men; adds more food variety, allowing you to choose from 100+ meals and snacks to make your menu
  • Uniquely Yours: Best variety, offering 150+ food choices and unlimited support, but it will cost you about $1.50 more per day

*You’ll notice that Nutrisystem uses celebrities like Dan Marino to advertise their plans for men, as Marie Osmond is apparently not exactly click-bait for the average man.

Does Nutrisystem for Men Work?

In an attempt to answer the question of whether Nutrisystem for Men works, we consulted the ratings from 4760 customer ratings from nutrisystem.com.

Although user ratings are from both men and women, the result is that about 80% of men and women report being “satisfied” (4 stars) or “very satisfied” (5 stars) when asked to rate the diet for “overall satisfaction.”(Updated 1/22/19)

While diets, including Nutrisystem for Men, don’t publish actual success rates, this is a good reference for whether the diet works.

Tip: You’ll Need to Supplement with Fruits & Veggies

circus strongman small

Have you heard of Nutrisystem’s Fresh Start campaign for men? (They also advertise it on tv as, “nutrisystem for men/40“) Like their regular plans, Nutrisystem for Men advises you supplement their prepared meals with fresh fruits and vegetables.

When calculating the potential cost of this diet, make sure to account for your (weekly?) trips to the supermarket, and the occasional restaurant meal.

The fresh fruits and vegetables give you vitamins and nutrition crucial to every healthy diet. No dietician or doctor worth their salt would recommend any diet that omits fruits and vegetables, so skip the miracle weight loss pills and detox shakes that do!

Tip: Know the cancellation policy

Customer review: “I read the fine print but evidently missed the part about owing a penalty if I canceled after the first order and didn’t order a second. This is not a good business practice… So now I owe a $125.00 penalty!” – Larry of Palm Harbor, FL

Before you signup, all men should understand Nutrisystem’s cancellation policy. It’s the source of some bad reviews, and education can prevent that. Here’s how it works:

If you signup and don’t like it, you have 14 days to cancel without paying a penalty. If you don’t cancel in that timeframe, you are obligated to pay for and receive at least 2 months of meals. That means if you cancel after 14 days and before your second shipment, you pay a $125 cancellation fee.

Why $125? They figure that’s the savings you got when you signed up, so they are taking it back, and it angers people who have to pay it!

Tip: Contact Them Before You Write a Bad Review

One thing that you’ll notice on trusted review sites is that Nutrisystem responds to most negative reviews, and tries to resolve the situation. In fact, on Consumer Affairs a number of men have favorably changed their review and rating after Nutrisystem contacted them to address their complaint.

So, if you do try it out and things aren’t going well, give them a call and tell them why you’re unhappy. They might be able to fix the issue and get you back on track!

Men: Also Make Sure You’re Getting These 5 Vitamins Daily

Nutrisystem is high in fiber and protein, and appears to meet daily recommendations for most nutrients that a man needs. However, regardless of what diet you’re on, men of all ages should make sure they get the following every day. (top 10)

  1. Multivitamin: This is a no-brainer, but make it part of your daily routine. Also, men’s multivitamins should include selenium (fights cancer) and zinc (for sperm)
  2. Fish Oil: 1-3g ear day for brain and heart health
  3. Probiotics: For gut health and your manly immune system
  4. Vitamin D: Has a number of health benefits for guys and helps to fight diabetes
  5. Glucosamine with Chondroitin: Great for your joints as you get older, especially if you have pain from sports injuries

In Conclusion

Mens Nutrisystem is a very convenient dieting option. Like the popular South Beach Diet (review / cost) they tell you what to eat, and when, and send you the “perfectly portioned” snacks and meals that are high in protein and fiber every month. You just have to supplement their food with fresh fruits and vegetables of your own from the grocery store.

The main difference in the diet for men is that you’ll be eating an extra snack during the day, and can drop 15-18 pounds in the first month. As a result, it costs a little more for the gentlemen than the ladies.

So does Nutrisystem for Men really work? For most men it does, but like any subscription or commitment, it’s good to ask yourself, will this diet work for my unique needs? If you think it might, check out today’s best coupon here.

Nutrisystem Diabetic Plan: How It Works + Reviews

nutrisystem d diabetes logoAll About Nutrisystem Diabetes Plan: A shocking 100+ million Americans now have diabetes or prediabetes according to the CDC. As you probably know, the most important thing as a diabetic is to control your blood glucose and to get to a healthy weight. This is easier said than done, and many times it requires a plan.

Nutrisystem now offers a plan, called Nutrisystem D, specifically for the needs of diabetics. But, how does it work, and is it the best diet for you? To answer that question, let’s take a closer look at the Nutrisystem D plan, and what customer reviews have to say.

*Update 12/01/18: There is now a promo code for an extra $50 off the already discount priced of Nutrisystem D on our coupon page here

First, How all Nutrisystem Plans Work:

nutrisystem d food

Nutrisystem is a meal-delivery diet plan based on the monthly delivery of prepared, “perfectly portioned” meals that are high in protein and fiber and low in “bad” carbs. With Nutrisystem you’ll eat 6 smaller meals each day which helps to stabilize blood sugar levels and reduce food cravings.

The goal with Nutrisystem D, like their other plans, is to achieve a sustainable weight loss of about 10 pounds per month with more possible if you add in exercise.

Nutrisystem is a favorite of busy people because they provide most of your monthly meals with the exception of a few weekly “flex” meals which you use to eat out or cook on your own. They basically tell you what to eat and when which means that while your dining options are limited, there’s no counting calories or points.

Like their regular diet program, Nutrisystem offers three plan levels for diabetics. All plans include:

  • Monthly delivery of meals including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks
  • Online tracking tools and Nutrisystem app
  • Unlimited access to Certified Diabetes Educators and expert counselors
  • Free (FedEx) shipping

The main difference in plan levels is that you’ll pay more for increased food variety. Here are the three plans for diabetics:

  • Diabetes BASIC: The least expensive plan, but you won’t have the ability to customize your menu (About $8.50 per day with promotion)
  • Diabetes CORE: The most popular plan, CORE adds the ability to choose your own meals which is great if you find menu items that you want to switch
  • Diabetes UNIQUELY YOURS: All of the features of the other plans plus an increased variety of menu options and frozen meals included. With Uniquely Yours you’ll pay about $10.50 per day with the promotion

A new option with all Nutrisystem plans is to add their DNA Body Blueprint kit, which may be especially helpful for those with a family history of diabetes.

Nutrisystem D: Is the Food Good?

By default Nutrisystem will put together a menu and send you their “chef’s choices,” but you can customize the menu with all plans except the “Basic” plan. Want to see what their diabetes-friendly food looks like? Here’s how to sort the meals:

view nutrisystem diabetes friendly food

You can sort the meals and snacks by “diabetes friendly”

  1. Click on View Menu
  2. Click Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, or Snacks on the top nav
  3. Click “filer by” and choose “Diabetes Friendly”

There are also other filters such as lower sodium or for specific allergies

Nutrisystem D: Sample Menu:

nutrisystem diabetes sample menu

A sample menu of their diabetes diet is quite similar to our sample menu for their regular plans. The only difference is that they exclude foods that are higher in sugar and sodium. Here’s what a day on Nutrisystem D might look like:

  • Breakfast: Nutrisystem Maple Brown Sugar Oatmeal
  • Mid-Morning Snack: Greek yogurt (low-fat) and fresh blueberries
  • Lunch: Nutrisystem Ravioli Formaggio w/ fresh veggies
  • Afternoon snack: Whole grain crackers with cheese
  • Dinner: Nutrisystem Santa Fe Style Chicken
  • Evening Snack: Nutrisystem White Cheddar Popcorn

*Why not take a mid-afternoon walk with a co-worker to burn some calories and help speed up your metabolism? Or, make walking the dog an evening routine!

Nutrisystem D: Sodium, Sugar, Carbs?

If you have diabetes, you’re probably used to reading food labels. The good news is that every meal and snack option on nutrisystem.com has detailed nutritional info and ingredients. If you have diabetes, it’s not a bad idea to check out some products before signing up to see if you are comfortable with levels of sodium, carbs, and sugar:

nutrisystem food nutrition

Each of the meals and snacks also includes real customer reviews and ratings. You can sort food by filters like, “diabetes friendly” or highest rated.

What’s Different About Their “Diabetes” Plan? (Nutrisystem D vs Regular)

We recently wrote an extensive review of Nutrisystem as well as reporting on the cost and whether it works, but there are some differences with their diabetes plans.

Like the other Nutrisystem plans, the low-glycemic “D” plan offers “balanced nutrition for safe and effective weight loss.” Like the other plans you’ll consumer 1200-1500 calories each day and get 70+ grams of protein a day. However, the D Plan is different in a few ways including:

  • The Turbo13 “quick start” to the plan is not included as it isn’t diabetes-friendly
  • Meal selections with less sodium, aiming for the lower end of the 1800-2300 range
  • Lower glycemic plan omits certain food choices and has less sugar
  • Lose weight to reduce A1c levels

In summary, Nutrisystem D is the same as the “regular” Nutrisystem plans except “D” includes a few modifications including lower sugar and sodium foods and the omission of the Turbo 13 phase

Nutrisystem D: Customer Reviews

women reviews

Because their diabetes plans are so similar to their regular plans for women and men, it’s worth reading all the Nutrisystem reviews out there. However, a number of reviews that we read talk specifically about the diabetes plan.

Here’s what customers said:

Good Reviews:

Because this diet consists of smaller, more frequent meals with a low glycemic index, it’s a good fit for many diabetics. A number of people appreciated the convenience of their meal planning:

“I am a type 2 diabetic who is insulin resistant due to a car accident, I had put on a lot of weight which puts me in danger health-wise. I turned to Nutrisystem and since July have lost almost fourty pounds… It is one day at a time but working, and with frozen food, so easy to manage meals. This is now a big part of my medical regimen.” – Joe of Philadelphia, PA

Several customers also mentioned that the access to expert counselors was a big plus:

“The counselor was very helpful in explaining the best use of the system and sent us a list of recommended lower sugar items and lower carbs list which is very helpful for me as I am a type 2 diabetic.” – Karen of Sebring, FL

Negative Reviews:

You can actually learn a lot from bad reviews, as it’s good to be critical of any diet, especially one that is a big commitment and lifestyle change. Here are some common customer complaints:

“The meals didn’t say, “no sugar added” or mentioning anything like Splenda… the food has too much salt and sugar. That’s totally unacceptable as a diabetic/weight loss program – no doctor would say “ok” to such high sugar content.” – Gary of Sparks, NV

To be fair, the Nutrisystem meals fall within the USDA recommendations for sugar, salt, and carbs (which are converted to sugar) for women and men with type 2 diabetes. (is Nutrisystem healthy?) If your doctor has specific requirements for your daily sugar and sodium intake, discuss that first (chat?) with Nutrisystem before signing up.

Also consider that Nutrisystem plans contain about 40% less sodium than the average American consumes each day. So, while prepared meals of any kind seem to contain a fair share of sodium, it should be noted that for most people this will be a big improvement.

“Structure of their diet program was fine and I can live with the quality of the food… Could find nowhere on their website that states you must sign up for a minimum of two months (over $700) or pay a $125 penalty!” – Garrett of Henderson, NV

When you signup for Nutrisystem you are committing to at least 2 months of meal delivery unless you cancel within the first 14 days. If you cancel after 14 days but before your second order, you’ll have to pay a $125 cancellation fee, which angered a lot of customers!

Expert Reviews & Ratings:

Besides reading what customers have to say, let’s look for actual success rates and wisdom from studies and experts. Here are a few:

  • A 2013 study found that 72 of 100 obese diabetics on the Nutrisystem D program reduced their A1C significantly more than the control group, meeting the ADA’s goal of A1C level under 7%
  • In a study of 69 obese Type 2 diabetics, published in the journal Postgraduate Medicine in 2009, researchers reported that those assigned to eat meals on the Nutrisystem D diabetic plan lost an average of 18 pounds after 3 months compared with only 1 pound for the control group, who attended educational sessions on diabetes management
  • A 2015 study in the Annals of Internal Medicine comparing various commercial weight-loss programs found that Nutrisystem participants lost at least 3.8 percent more weight after three months on the program than a control group that received education and counseling. The authors call diets like Nutrisystem “promising”
  • U.S. News lists Nutrisystem as one of the best commercial diabetes diets, but seems to not specifically rank their diabetes plan, Nutrisystem D

These studies are pretty dry to actually read, but it’s good to find some positive results and success rates from doctors and experts.

How Much Does Nutrisystem D Cost?

The price of Nutrisystem D plans are the same as the the regular plans, coming in at about $10-12 per day or $300-360 per month (with promotion) depending on which level you go with. The difference between their economy “BASIC” plan and the top of the line “UNIQUELY YOURS” plan is about $2 per day.

Most people seem to split the difference and choose the middle Diabetes CORE Plan, as it’s their most popular.

If you’re interested, check out their ongoing new customer promotion which locks in your initial signup rate for good. Some of the other coupons revert to a higher price after 2-3 months.

Like we were saying, don’t get stuck using a coupon that doesn’t lock-in the promotional rate. Here’s their best offer for diabetics:
